Changing Mind in Trading

Keynes famously said, "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?" This phrase highlights a key aspect of every trader: if the initial conditions of a trade change, the strategy must be adjusted. Let's analyze this a bit.

Difference

Every trader must have a plan and, as the saying goes, stick to it. The most important reason is that the strategy is decided during moments of rationality, free from emotions. In other words, the plan must be followed strictly.

Let's suppose we buy at 10 with a SL at 9. If after buying, the price starts to drop to 9.5, we shouldn't close the trade immediately but rather respect the volatility margin we allocated for our position.

However, something rarely mentioned is that this rule applies only when the external conditions of the trade remain the same, and price movements fall within the previously considered parameters that led us to set that specific SL.

Change in Conditions

But what happens if conditions change drastically? In this case, a good trader takes note of what has happened, reviews their analysis, and likely determines that given the new circumstances, the previous strategy is no longer valid and must be modified.

For example, let's say we buy an altcoin with a 10% SL, assuming that BTC will move within a 3% range at its current price (meaning we don’t expect it to drop more than 3% due to support, moving averages, or other indicators in our analysis). However, if BTC starts dropping beyond that 3% range, our strategy becomes invalid, and our SL is likely to be triggered. At this point, we may choose to exit the position earlier or, if the SL is hit, go short, completely reversing our stance.

A similar example in stocks would be buying a stock and holding it as long as the index remains above a certain level. If the index drops below our trigger value, we should sell the stock since the context has changed and will likely affect its price, pushing it far beyond our loss tolerance.

These behaviors define a good trader for several reasons:

• Quickly accept when they are wrong

• Adjust their strategy

• Execute a new plan

Considerations

Traders who excel at this practice are typically those operating on lower time frames (scalpers or day traders), as they are used to rapid and highly volatile movements. As the investment horizon increases, making these adjustments becomes more complex, as reversals may take several days to form.

What I aim to highlight in this article is a trader’s ability to adapt over ego and emotion. However, the line between sticking to the plan and making a sharp adjustment is very thin and takes a long time to master.

To summarize in fewer words:

• Sticking to the plan is essential as long as the initial conditions remain valid.

• If the initial parameters change, our strategy must change as well, as it was designed for a different market environment.

In a world like the markets, where information and conditions constantly shift, it is crucial to understand our limits and adapt as quickly as possible to new circumstances.

The best trader is not the one who seeks to be right but the one who makes money despite being wrong.
