Blockchain & Gaming - Not ‘IF’ but ‘WHEN’?

The concept of blockchain and gaming is exciting. Digital ownership with NFTs, true immersive in-game economies where players can play and earn for the time and value they bring to a game. The overall capabilities of the blockchain add an incredible layer to the concept of what gaming could be.

There has long since been “black market” economies within games, with unofficial websites and entities being used for gamers to take advantage of, whether that be: World of Warcraft - Gold Farming

CSGO - Weapon Skins Trading/Selling

FIFA - Buying Coins FIFA Ultimate Team Crypto and blockchain solve this and the question is not ‘if’ but ‘when’ will we see the major gaming titles adopt blockchain technology. Possibly sooner than you may think…

GTA6 Introducing Cryptocurrency?

Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most highly anticipated game releases of all time…

Recent rumours from a Rockstar Games insider have been circulating, claiming that:

  • The game could release by 2023-2024

  • The story will take place in Miami, Colombia & Cuba

  • Will introduce Cryptocurrency

  • Have crypto rewards for players to play and earn…

The last title in the GTA franchise (GTA5) smashed numerous records and was (and still is) one of the most popular games of the last decade. Play-to-Earn (GameFi) has also exploded in recent years within crypto, with tens of billions in value created for a few modest games. Combining the two would send shockwaves through both industries.Would Crypto and GTA fit? Well GTA5 had……A Huge Online Scene …Virtual Real Estate …In-Game Currency …Stock Trading …Asset Ownership (Cars, Clothing, Weapons and more) When we think of what Web3 and the blockchain allow for, much of it centres around digital ownership. NFTs & Cryptocurrencies enable users to own their in-game assets in current blockchain games, and with all of the content, the GTA franchise provides then this could be an incredible fit for the game.

So are the rumours TRUE?

Given that these ‘leaks’ are simply rumours, we must state that none of what has been said so far is confirmed or considered fact. There seem to be 3 options for what plays out here:

  1. It is just a rumour and there will be NO crypto in GTA6

  2. Fully integrated blockchain economy within GTA6 where players can play, earn & own

  3. Cryptocurrencies will be an in-game feature but not owned in real-life

Personally, I feel like scenario 3 is most likely… WHY? Blockchain Games in their earliest forms have not proven themselves to be highly sustainable ecosystems yet to date - particularly their game economies It would be a monumental risk for Rockstar Games to potentially complicate or even ruin what is already an incredibly successful games franchise by introducing blockchain dynamics at this stage Crypto is interesting, growing and culturally having more of an impact than ever. In a game which revolves around interesting content, money, crime etc - one could easily see cryptocurrency-related storylines within the gameWe have already seen Bitcoin embedded into the Escape From Tarkov game successfully, where players can find and own the asset in-game without owning the real thing. It’s fun and cool and would be great exposure for crypto even if not utilising the real thing!

Are we close to AAA Blockchain Games?

Closer than you might think… Currently, the issue within blockchain gaming is how new the space is, which has resulted in: - Low-Quality Games - Poor Game Ecosystems & Economies There are still many dynamics and obstacles in integrating blockchain with traditional gaming titles, particularly how to integrate actual economies successfully and sustainably into virtual gamesWe are seeing AAA games being built in the blockchain space already, maybe these will first provide the answer to how major gaming titles can successfully integrate blockchain technology before the traditional gaming powerhouses adopt it themselves. We have seen the gaming industry develop and innovate repeatedly over the years. Pay to Play (traditional games) > Free to Play Model > Play to Earn? Cosmetic assets are integral to many modern-day games, generating billions in value which currently the player is unable to redeem any of. As people's lives continually move more online whether it's shopping, socialising or entertaining, the world is becoming more digital. A trend that is set to continue, and the prospect of digital ownership and identity is only becoming more real. Gaming is one of the clearest integrations of this and blockchain and Web3 has the solution. As mentioned at the start this isn’t a case of ‘if’ but ‘when’
